Choosing Measurement Sensors components

Measurement sensors are a category where the OEM part number is the spec — the model encodes range, resolution, spot size, working distance, and the controller it pairs with. Substituting "a 30 mm laser displacement sensor" without matching the model rarely produces the same measurement result.

Specs to confirm before ordering:

  • Measurement principle: laser triangulation, confocal chromatic, time-of-flight, CCD optical, eddy-current, LVDT
  • Reference distance (working distance) and measuring range — e.g., 30 ± 5 mm
  • Resolution and linearity, often quoted at full range
  • Spot size at the reference distance (relevant for textured or curved targets)
  • Sampling rate, especially for moving or vibrating targets
  • Target material compatibility — diffuse, specular, or both; some heads have specific variants for matte vs. shiny
  • Controller/amplifier pairing — head and controller are usually part-number matched
  • Output: analog, RS-232/485, Ethernet, fieldbus, digital switch

Common gotchas: a Keyence LK-G or LJ-V sensor head must be paired with its specific controller (LK-G3001P, LJ-V7000), and the calibration is stored in the controller — swapping the head alone changes the calibration. Micro-Epsilon scanCONTROL heads need the corresponding interface card or matched controller. Some confocal sensors require a fiber connection between the optical pen and the controller; the fiber is also matched in length.

Typical applications: thickness measurement of metal strip and film, runout measurement on rotating shafts, gap and flush inspection on automotive assemblies, height verification on populated PCBs, and wear monitoring on tooling. Many of these applications are tied to a specific OEM measurement system that was originally validated as a unit — replacing one component out of a matched set often means re-validating.

For obsolete measurement heads, controllers, and amplifiers, send the OEM part number for a sourcing quote.

Do head and controller need to match by part number?
Yes, for almost all precision measurement systems. Calibration is stored in the controller and tied to the head. Mixing serial numbers within a matched pair voids the factory calibration.
Can you source obsolete Keyence and Micro-Epsilon measurement systems?
Yes. Legacy LK-G, LJ-V, and Micro-Epsilon controller and head pairs are sourced regularly. Send both part numbers if possible.
Will surplus units come with the original calibration certificate?
When the unit ships with its original documentation, yes. When the certificate is not available, we state so before purchase. Re-calibration by the OEM or a calibration lab can be arranged separately.
Is bench testing the same as calibration verification?
No. Bench testing confirms power-up, basic function, and output. Verification against a calibrated artifact is a separate service we can quote on request.
How are these shipped?
From St. Louis with original or equivalent protective packaging. Free US shipping over $50, international over $350.
What is the warranty?
12 months functional warranty on the device. Calibration drift outside the factory specification within that window is covered; user-induced damage or recalibration drift after extended hard use is not.
