Choosing Circular Cable Assemblies components

Circular cable assembly selection is a combination of the connector specs at each end, the conductor count and gauge, the cable length, the jacket material for the environment, and any shielding required for high-speed protocols. Pre-built assemblies eliminate field-termination variability and deliver factory-overmolded IP67/IP69K ratings that are difficult to achieve in field-built cables.

Specs to confirm before ordering:

  • Connector at end A: M5, M8, M12, M16, or M23 with the right pin count, gender (male/female), coding (A/B/D/L/X), and angle (straight or 90°)
  • Connector at end B: same options — or asymmetric (e.g., M12 to flying leads, M12 to RJ45 for industrial Ethernet)
  • Cable length and tolerance
  • Conductor count and gauge: typical 3 + earth for sensors, 4–5 conductors for actuators, 4 pairs for industrial Ethernet
  • Cable jacket: PVC (general indoor), PUR (drag chain and oil/coolant), TPE (cold flex), FEP (high temperature)
  • Shielding: unshielded for general use, foil + braid for industrial Ethernet and Profibus
  • UL/CSA listings as appropriate
  • Continuous-flex rating for cable carrier applications
  • LED indicator option (some molded assemblies have integrated power/signal LEDs)
  • Coupling: standard threaded or push-pull quick-disconnect

Common gotchas: "M12 4-pin" assemblies come in A-code (sensor/actuator) and D-code (Ethernet) — visually similar, electrically different. A 5 m cable used where a 4 m was specified means 1 m of coiled cable that adds inductance and can affect EtherCAT timing on sensitive networks. PUR jacket cables look like PVC but cost more and last longer in harsh environments — worth the difference where it applies. Right-angle connectors save vertical space in tight installations but force a fixed cable orientation; if the cable needs to bend the other direction, the entire assembly is the wrong choice.

Typical applications: connecting sensors and actuators to PLC inputs/outputs with molded patch cords, extending sensor cables to remote drops with extension assemblies, fieldbus runs with shielded Profinet/EtherCAT cables, and motor power and feedback cables on servo systems. On legacy installations, exact OEM cable assembly replacement preserves the connector pinout and protocol compatibility.

For obsolete circular cable assemblies, send the OEM part number for a sourcing quote.

Do you stock obsolete circular cable assemblies?
Yes. Discontinued Phoenix Contact SAC legacy codes, retired Lumberg ASB early generations, end-of-life Turck WKC-series, and earlier Murr MQ assembly codes are sourced through our supplier network.
Can I order custom lengths?
Standard lengths from 0.3 m to 30 m cover most needs. Custom lengths can be ordered direct from the OEM at extended lead time. Send the connector spec and the needed length for a quote.
Will a generic shielded cable work for Profinet?
Profinet specifies Type A/B/C cables with green jacket and specific shielding to meet EMC and bandwidth requirements. Generic shielded Ethernet often works electrically but does not meet Profinet certification. Use Profinet-rated cables for proper installations.
PVC vs. PUR jacket — when does PUR matter?
Drag chains (continuous flex), oil exposure, outdoor installations, and cold environments below 0 °C. PUR is more flexible, more abrasion-resistant, and far longer-lasting in those environments. PVC works fine for static indoor wiring.
Are LED indicators useful in cable connectors?
For troubleshooting, yes — a visible LED at the connector indicates power present and (on some variants) signal active. Slight cost premium that pays back during commissioning and service.
What is the warranty?
12-month functional warranty on the assembly. Damage from kinking, chafe, pull-out from inadequate strain relief, or chemical exposure beyond rated environment is not covered.
