Choosing Retroreflective Target Reflectors components

Retroreflective targets look interchangeable, but the prism design and surface treatment matter for maximum reliable sensing range. A generic 50 mm reflector might work at 3 m where an OEM-matched 50 mm reflector reaches 5 m with the same sensor — the difference is in the prism density and reflectivity.

Specifications to confirm before ordering:

  • Reflector diameter or dimensions
  • Required sensing distance with margin (target at 50–70% of rated maximum)
  • Sensor manufacturer for optimal matching
  • Polarized vs non-polarized — polarized retroreflective sensors need rotating-polarization targets
  • Mounting hardware included or separate
  • Environmental requirements (UV, washdown, vibration, temperature)
  • Acceptance cone angle (most are ±10–20 degrees from perpendicular)

Common sizes and ranges:

  • 25–35 mm round: short-range applications, up to ~2 m
  • 50 mm round: general-purpose, typically up to ~4 m
  • 84 mm round (the Banner BRT-84 standard): medium-long range, up to ~10 m
  • Larger heavy-duty targets: long-range outdoor applications, 15 m+
  • Square targets: easier to align with right-angle features, similar performance to round

For installations exposed to dust, oil mist, or repeated washdown, plan for periodic reflector cleaning. Even a thin coating of contamination reduces effective sensing range significantly, and small reflectors lose margin first.

Can you source legacy Banner BRT-84 or SICK PL80A reflectors?
Yes — long-range retroreflective targets including BRT-84, BRT-150, SICK PL-series, and similar OEM-matched reflectors are common requests. Many are interchangeable functionally even when no longer produced.
Will a generic reflector work with a Banner sensor?
Often, yes — but at reduced range. Banner's OEM reflectors are tuned for maximum sensing distance with their sensors. Substituting a generic typically gives 50–80% of the original range, which may still be enough depending on your installation.
What's a "polarized" reflector and when do I need one?
Polarized retroreflective sensors transmit polarized light and only accept light returned with rotated polarization — the property that lets them reject shiny objects (which return non-rotated light). They require special polarization-rotating reflectors. Standard prismatic reflectors won't return rotated polarization correctly.
How often should reflectors be cleaned?
Inspection schedule depends on the environment. Clean indoor environments: every 6–12 months. Welding cells, food processing, or dusty environments: monthly or weekly. Outdoor installations: at least quarterly, with UV-stabilized reflectors preferred.
Are reflectors new or surplus?
Most are new-old-stock or current production. Reflectors don't degrade in storage. The product page lists condition where relevant.
