Choosing Elevator Drives components

Elevator drive replacement is a specialty: elevator service requires safety-conscious electrical work, code-compliant installation, and the use of components specifically rated for elevator use under ASME A17.1 (US) and EN 81 (Europe). General-purpose VFDs are not approved substitutes for elevator-listed drives.

Specs to confirm before ordering:

  • Exact OEM catalog number with all option codes
  • Motor type: AC induction (geared traction), AC PM (gearless machine), DC (older legacy installations)
  • HP/kW and full-load amps
  • Input voltage: 208/240/480/600 VAC three-phase
  • Drive type: closed-loop vector with encoder feedback (most modern), open-loop vector, sensorless vector, V/Hz (very old)
  • Encoder feedback: TTL/HTL incremental, sin/cos, absolute serial, EnDat — matched to the machine encoder
  • S-curve / jerk-limited motion profile capability for ride quality
  • Regen handling: integrated regen-to-grid (Quattro AC), DC bus shared regen, or dynamic brake resistor
  • Brake control: integrated brake-output with timing, or external brake-monitor module
  • Safety integration: STO for sufficient EN 81 compliance, or external safety relay
  • Code listings: ASME A17.1, EN 81-20/50, certification labels
  • Communication to elevator controller: serial, CANopen Lift (CiA 417), proprietary

Common gotchas: elevator drives are not interchangeable across brands — each drive has its own integration with the elevator controller, its own encoder pairing, and its own setup-and-commissioning sequence. Replacing a Magnetek HPV-900 with a Yaskawa L1000A is a full system migration, not a drive swap. Drive tuning for ride quality (S-curve acceleration, jerk limits, leveling speed) is unique per installation and must be re-done after a drive change. Elevator code requires that any drive replacement be done by a licensed elevator service company in most jurisdictions — selling a drive does not imply installation authority.

Typical applications: traction elevator drive replacement on commercial and residential buildings, gearless PM machine drives for high-rise, hydraulic elevator soft-start replacement, dumbwaiter and freight applications, and parking-elevator drive replacement.

For obsolete elevator drives, send the OEM part number for a sourcing quote.

Do you stock obsolete elevator drives?
Yes. Discontinued Magnetek HPV-900 first generations, retired Yaskawa GPD315 elevator, end-of-life KEB F5, and earlier Schindler 5500 codes are sourced through our supplier network.
Can I use a general-purpose VFD for an elevator?
No. Elevator code (ASME A17.1, EN 81) requires elevator-listed drives with documented compliance. General-purpose VFDs lack the listings and may not handle elevator-specific behavior (S-curve, regen, brake interaction) correctly.
Is professional installation required?
In most jurisdictions, elevator drive installation requires a licensed elevator service company and is subject to inspection. We supply the drive; installation and commissioning are the responsibility of qualified elevator personnel.
Will my saved drive parameters transfer to a replacement?
If the model matches exactly, yes — clone parameters via the OEM software (Magnetek IMPULSE, Yaskawa elevator config tool). Across drive models, parameters need re-derivation and re-tuning to the specific motor and ride profile.
Do these drives include regenerative-to-grid capability?
Some models (Magnetek Quattro AC, Yaskawa L1000A with regen unit) include regen-to-grid as an option for energy recovery. Others use dynamic brake resistors. Specify the regen option when ordering — it is part-number coded.
What is the warranty?
12-month functional warranty on the drive. Installation that violates elevator code, tuning errors, or damage from improper commissioning is not covered.
