Choosing Machine Interface components

Machine interface device selection is dictated by the machine controller — robotic teach pendants are brand- and generation-specific, MPG handwheels are CNC-specific, and operator pendants integrate with specific PLC families. Substituting across brands rarely works without significant integration effort.

Specs to confirm before ordering:

Compatibility with the host controller: robot make and controller generation (ABB IRC5 vs. OmniCore, FANUC R-30iB vs. R-30iA, KUKA KR C4 vs. C5)
For MPG handwheels: pulse-per-revolution count, output type (TTL quadrature, RS-422 differential), and axis-select wiring
Dead-man enabling switch: 3-position rocker, mushroom, or grip-style — required for any pendant used in teach mode on safety-rated robots
Emergency stop integration: hardwired safety contacts that route through the machine's safety system
Cable length and connector style — pendants typically use industrial multi-pin circular connectors
Display: graphical touchscreen (modern teach pendants), monochrome text (older models), or status LEDs only (jog dials, simple pendants)
IP rating — IP54 minimum for shop-floor use, IP65 for washdown
Drop and impact rating — pendants get dropped; cycle-rated drop resistance matters

Common gotchas: teach pendants are tightly bound to the robot controller's software image — replacing the pendant alone on a robot at a different software level may give "pendant not recognized" errors that require a controller-side update or a downgrade of the pendant firmware. MPG handwheels with 100 pulse/rev output give different jog response than 200 pulse/rev units on the same CNC — verify the CNC's expected count. Dead-man enabling switches with the wrong contact count (3-position vs. 2-position) fail to satisfy the safety logic on modern robot controllers. Pendant cables are subject to chafe and conductor breakage from coiling; the connector strain relief matters as much as the pendant itself.

Will my old pendant work on a newer robot controller?

Sometimes, with the right firmware. ABB FlexPendant for IRC5 may work on early IRC5+ but not on OmniCore. FANUC iPendant is specific to controller generation. Verify before ordering.

Can I use an MPG from another machine on my CNC?

Sometimes — if pulse count, output type (TTL vs. differential), and connector pinout match. CNCs often have a configurable pulse-per-revolution setting that accommodates different handwheels.

Is the dead-man enabling switch part of the safety system?

Yes. The 3-position enabling switch (off-on-off) is part of the robot's safety circuit and routes through the safety controller. Substituting a 2-position rocker invalidates the safety case.

Are pendant cables replaceable?

For most pendants, yes — the cable assembly is a separate item from the pendant body. Damaged cables can be replaced without the whole pendant. Send the pendant model for cable-only options.

What is the warranty?

12-month functional warranty. Damage from drops, impact, or cable damage from coiling/uncoiling is not covered.
