Choosing Adapter Cables Between Series components

Adapter cable selection is pinout-driven before anything else. Two cables with identical-looking connectors at each end can have different pin-to-pin mapping, and using the wrong mapping connects a 24 V power line to a signal input or a ground to a signal return — both lead to immediate damage.

Specs to confirm before ordering:

  • Connector at end A: type, pin count, gender, coding
  • Connector at end B: type, pin count, gender, coding
  • Pin-to-pin mapping (straight pin-for-pin vs. crossed vs. application-specific)
  • Cable length — typically short (0.3–2 m) for adapters; longer if used as a permanent extension
  • Cable jacket: PVC, PUR, TPE per environment
  • Shielding required, especially when crossing between protocols
  • UL/CSA listing
  • Current and voltage rating on each pin
  • Whether unused pins are terminated, capped, or left open

Common gotchas: M8 to M12 adapters exist in straight pin-for-pin (M8 pin 1 to M12 pin 1) and "shifted" variants (M8 4-pin to M12 5-pin where one pin is unused) — confirm the pinout before installation. M12 A-code to RJ45 adapters are not interchangeable with M12 D-code to RJ45 adapters; A-code adapters are for sensor/actuator wiring, D-code adapters are for Ethernet. Some brand-specific adapters reverse a pin assignment intentionally (e.g., Hirschmann to Lumberg with a pin-1/pin-3 swap) to correct for a legacy wiring convention — using a generic adapter where a brand-specific one is needed produces miswired signals.

Typical applications: connecting legacy M8 sensors to M12 sensor block inputs on new equipment, integrating older fieldbus devices into new industrial Ethernet networks, bridging RS-232 DB9 devices into M12-based serial networks, and transitioning between brand-specific connector ecosystems during partial machine upgrades.

For obsolete adapter cables, send the OEM part number for a sourcing quote.

Do you stock obsolete cross-series adapter cables?
Yes. Discontinued M8-to-M12 adapters, retired Hirschmann legacy adapters, and end-of-life DB9-to-M12 cables are sourced through our supplier network where surplus exists.
Will an adapter cable carry full current to my actuator?
Up to the lower of the two connectors' current ratings, and reduced by the cable conductor gauge. An adapter from a 4 A M12 to a 12 A M23 limits the circuit to ~4 A through the M12 contacts. Check both ends and the cable.
Can I have an adapter made custom?
Yes — for non-standard pinouts and combinations, custom adapter assemblies can be quoted with extended lead time. Send the wiring schedule for both ends and the cable length needed.
Do adapters affect EMC performance on industrial Ethernet?
Yes if shielding is broken or pin assignments are non-standard. Use Profinet/EtherCAT-rated adapters for those protocols rather than generic M12-to-RJ45, which often have inadequate shielding for high-speed industrial Ethernet.
How do I verify the pinout before installation?
Beep-test pin-to-pin with a continuity meter, or measure resistance on each pin pair. We can provide the pinout diagram for any listed adapter on request.
What is the warranty?
12-month functional warranty. Damage from mis-mating, over-current beyond rating, or chafe from inadequate strain relief is not covered.
