Choosing Circular Connector Assemblies components

Circular connector assemblies are spec-driven by the connector at each end, the cable length, and the cable jacket. A "5 m M12 4-pin straight-to-straight" assembly comes in many variants depending on coding (A vs. D vs. X), jacket (PVC vs. PUR), and shield (unshielded for general, shielded for Profinet/EtherCAT).

Specs to confirm before ordering:

  • Connector at end A: M8 3-pin, M8 4-pin, M12 3-pin, M12 4-pin (A/D/X-code), M12 5-pin (A/B-code), M12 8-pin, or flying leads
  • Connector at end B: same options — or asymmetric if needed
  • Both ends straight, or one or both 90° angled (saves vertical space in tight installations)
  • Cable length
  • Cable jacket: PVC, PUR, TPE
  • Shielded vs. unshielded — required shielded for Profinet, EtherCAT, and other high-speed protocols
  • UL/CSA listing
  • LED-indicator option (some assemblies have power/signal LEDs in the connector overmold)
  • Coupling style: standard threaded, push-pull quick-disconnect

Common gotchas: a "shielded" assembly has the shield connected to the connector body shell; for EtherCAT and Profinet to work properly, the shield must continue through the cable AND be bonded at both ends. Some installations break the shield at one end (telecommunications convention) which is incorrect for industrial. Length tolerance on molded cables is tighter than field-built — substituting a 5 m where a 4.5 m was specified means coiling 0.5 m of cable, which adds inductance and can affect signal integrity on EtherCAT. Right-angle connectors save space but force a fixed cable orientation; straight connectors are more flexible during install but need more clearance.

Typical applications: connecting sensors to junction blocks with strain-relieved molded patch cords, fieldbus wiring (Profinet, EtherCAT) with shielded M12 D-code or X-code assemblies, valve and actuator connections with M12 5-pin or M8 4-pin, and inter-machine wiring with M12-to-flying-lead.

For obsolete circular connector assemblies, send the OEM part number for a sourcing quote.

Do you stock obsolete molded assemblies?
Yes. Discontinued Phoenix Contact SAC legacy codes, retired Lumberg molded variants, end-of-life Turck WKC-series, and earlier Murr MQ codes are sourced through our supplier network.
Shielded vs. unshielded — when do I need shielded?
Always for Profinet, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, and other high-speed industrial Ethernet. For sensor/actuator 24V wiring at short distance, unshielded is fine. For long sensor runs in noisy environments (near VFDs), shielded reduces signal corruption.
Right-angle vs. straight connector — which should I order?
Right-angle in tight installations where vertical clearance is limited. Straight where clearance allows, since they are more flexible during install. Both perform identically electrically; the choice is mechanical.
Can custom lengths be made?
Standard lengths from 0.3 to 30 m cover most needs. Custom lengths can sometimes be ordered direct from the OEM at extended lead time. Send the connector spec and the needed length for a quote.
How do I know which jacket I need?
Climate-controlled indoor: PVC is fine. Drag chains, oil exposure, outdoor: PUR. Continuous cold flex: TPE. When in doubt, specify PUR — slightly higher cost but compatible with more environments.
What is the warranty?
12-month functional warranty on the assembly. Damage from kinking, chafe, or pull-out from inadequate strain relief is not covered.
