Choosing HMI Accessories components

HMI accessory selection is mostly about matching the accessory to the specific HMI model and its panel cutout — accessories are almost universally model-specific. Generic accessories exist (universal mounting arms, generic sacrificial overlays) but precise fit usually requires OEM or OEM-equivalent.

Common accessory categories:

  • Membrane keypads and overlays: protective films, key-printed overlays for HMI function keys, anti-microbial variants — model-specific to the HMI bezel
  • Sacrificial touchscreen protectors: thin films that adhere to the touchscreen and absorb scratches and wear, replaced on a schedule
  • Mounting brackets: VESA-mount adapters, arm-mount kits, swivel mounts, pedestal mounts
  • Sun shields and visors: for outdoor installations and indoor locations with direct sunlight on the screen
  • Glare reduction films: anti-glare overlays for high-light environments where the screen is hard to read
  • Anti-microbial overlays: for food, medical, and pharmaceutical applications with hygiene requirements
  • Panel gaskets: replacement gaskets for HMIs that have lost their original seal after removal/re-installation
  • Replacement bezels: for cosmetic damage that does not affect function but matters for plant standards

Common gotchas: sacrificial overlays vary in optical clarity and touch responsiveness — cheap aftermarket overlays interfere with capacitive touch and produce mis-touches. Mounting brackets need to support the HMI's weight and absorb vibration; under-spec brackets allow the HMI to vibrate at frequencies that loosen connectors over time. Anti-glare films reduce reflections but also reduce screen brightness and color saturation — fine for indoor installations, may be a problem for outdoor where brightness already struggles.

Typical replacement scenarios: damaged keypad overlay on a heavily-used operator HMI, scratched touchscreen needing protection before further damage, HMI in direct sunlight needing a sun shield, food-plant HMI needing anti-microbial overlay for compliance, and gasket replacement after HMI removal for maintenance.

Do you stock obsolete HMI keypad overlays?
Yes. Discontinued PanelView Plus 6 overlays, retired SIMATIC HMI front films, end-of-life Pro-face Magelis bezels, and earlier Beckhoff CP-Star accessories are sourced through our supplier network.
Will a sacrificial overlay affect touchscreen responsiveness?
Quality overlays designed for capacitive touchscreens preserve touch behavior. Cheap or non-touch-rated overlays interfere with capacitance and produce mis-touches. Use overlays specifically rated for the touchscreen technology (resistive vs. PCAP) on your HMI.
Are anti-microbial overlays really necessary?
For food, medical, and pharmaceutical applications with hygiene requirements, yes — they reduce bacterial growth on the surface that operators touch repeatedly. For general industrial use, standard overlays are fine.
Can I mount my HMI on a swivel arm?
Yes, if the HMI has VESA mounting holes (most modern HMIs do) and the arm is rated for the HMI's weight. Verify the bracket/arm specifications before ordering — under-spec brackets cause vibration issues.
Does the gasket need replacement after every removal?
Not necessarily — many gaskets survive several remove-and-replace cycles. If the gasket shows compression set, cracking, or no longer maintains seal, replace it. NEMA 4 / IP65 sealing is dependent on the gasket's integrity.
What is the warranty?
12-month functional warranty on hardware. Wear from extended use (overlays, gaskets) is not a warranty event — these are consumable items.
