Choosing IPC Service Products components

Industrial PC service items are where many planned-maintenance programs either succeed or fail. Fans run continuously and have predictable wear-out; BIOS batteries fail silently and cause cryptic boot errors; consumer-grade SSDs wear out far faster than industrial-rated drives under continuous write loads. Stocking the right service items proactively avoids unplanned downtime.

Common service categories to consider:

  • Cooling fans: case fans, CPU heatsink fans, PSU fans — sized by dimensions and CFM rating. OEM-specified fan or equivalent with matching airflow
  • CMOS / RTC batteries: typically CR2032 or specific battery packs with connectors; expected life 5–10 years
  • Storage drives: 2.5" SATA SSDs, mSATA, M.2 SATA, M.2 NVMe — industrial-rated drives with wider temperature range and higher TBW (total bytes written) than consumer drives
  • RAM: DDR3, DDR4, DDR5, with or without ECC, matched to the motherboard's supported types
  • Dust filters: intake-fan filters, cabinet filters — consumable, replace on a regular schedule in dusty environments
  • Keyboards and pointing devices: industrial keyboards, sealed keypads, trackballs for panel-mount PCs
  • Touchscreen overlays: sacrificial touch-screen protectors for high-wear operator interfaces
  • Power-supply replacement: internal PC PSU for box PCs that take standard ATX or industrial 1U PSU

Common gotchas: consumer-grade SSDs in continuous-write applications (data acquisition, logging, swap-heavy applications) wear out in 6–18 months. Industrial SSDs with SLC, MLC-pSLC, or 3D TLC with overprovisioning extend lifetime to 5+ years for the same workload. CMOS batteries are not all the same — CR2032 holders look identical but battery-pack-style RTC batteries are PC-specific. Replacing OEM cooling fans with consumer fans of similar size sometimes results in lower airflow and thermal trips at the same load.

Typical situations: scheduled-maintenance refresh on a 5–10 year-old IPC, predictive replacement after fan-failure alarms, post-flood/post-fire restoration where storage media needs replacement, and BIOS-clock failure causing license-activation issues on legacy applications.

For obsolete IPC service items, send the OEM part number for a sourcing quote.

Do you stock obsolete IPC fans and batteries?
Yes. Discontinued Advantech fan kits, retired SIMATIC IPC battery codes, end-of-life Allen-Bradley VersaView keypads, and earlier Beckhoff IPC accessories are sourced through our supplier network.
Should I use industrial or consumer SSDs?
Industrial for production use — wider temperature range, higher endurance (TBW), longer warranty, and consistent performance over the drive's life. Consumer SSDs are acceptable only for low-write applications and read-mostly workloads.
Why does my IPC lose time after power-off?
CMOS / RTC battery is depleted. Replace the battery and reset the BIOS clock. After a long shelf time, surplus IPCs commonly have depleted batteries; replacement is a routine part of bringing surplus units into service.
Can I use a generic case fan as a replacement?
Sometimes — if dimensions, voltage, and airflow match the OEM specification. Slight airflow reductions can cause thermal trips at full load. We will provide OEM-equivalent fans when available to avoid this issue.
Are RAM modules included with replacement IPCs?
For complete IPCs, RAM is part of the unit. RAM as a service item is sold separately when upgrading or replacing failed modules. Match the motherboard's supported RAM type (DDR3 vs. DDR4, ECC vs. non-ECC, max speed).
What is the warranty?
12-month functional warranty on hardware. Storage drive failures from extended power-off storage (data retention is typically rated for ~10 years at room temperature) and battery exhaustion from age are not covered.
