Choosing Relay Sockets components

Relay socket selection is mechanically simple but easy to get wrong because pin count and pinout are not standardized across brands or relay families. A socket that physically accepts a relay does not guarantee correct pin-to-function mapping.

Specs to confirm before ordering:

Pin count and base style: 8-pin square (Form A), 8-pin blade, 11-pin octal (round), 14-pin square, 5-pin mini-cube
Relay family compatibility — the relay manufacturer typically lists the specific socket part number for each relay model
Terminal style: screw (standard), spring-clamp (push-in), or barrier strip
Current rating per pole — must equal or exceed the relay's contact rating
DIN-rail mountable or panel-mount
Side-mountable retaining clip vs. top clip (different cabinets accommodate different orientations)
LED indicator option if the socket includes a status LED
Test button option for manually toggling the relay
Free-wheel diode / RC suppression module compatibility for DC coil applications

Common gotchas: octal (11-pin) sockets from different brands may have the pin numbering rotated — Omron PYF and Allen-Bradley 700-HN look identical but verify the pin diagram. Screw-terminal sockets loosen under vibration; spring-clamp (push-in) sockets eliminate this failure mode and are now standard on most new installations. Sockets sold without a retaining clip leave the relay vulnerable to vibration-induced unplugging; always order with the retaining clip option. Mixing socket styles in a cabinet creates confusion during maintenance — standardize per cabinet section where possible.

Typical applications: cabinet-wired control logic, PLC output isolation through interface relays, motor starter coil drivers, and signal interfacing in OEM machinery. On legacy installations, exact-OEM socket replacement preserves the existing relay base compatibility and wiring; substituting socket brands often forces wiring changes.

Will an Omron socket fit an Allen-Bradley relay?

Screw terminal vs. spring-clamp — which should I use?

Spring-clamp (push-in) for vibration-prone environments and high-density wiring — they do not loosen and are faster to terminate. Screw-terminal is still used widely where existing standards specify them or where field service personnel are accustomed to it.

Does the socket include a retaining clip?

Some include it standard, some sell it as an option. We state the configuration on each listing. Always use a retaining clip in industrial cabinets — vibration alone can unseat an unsecured plug-in relay.

Are LED-indicator sockets useful?

For troubleshooting, yes — a visible LED indicates coil voltage at the socket without needing a meter. Slightly higher cost but pays back during commissioning and service.

What is the warranty?

12-month functional warranty. Contact wear from over-current beyond the socket rating and terminal damage from over-torquing are not covered.
