Choosing Sensors and Camera components

Smart cameras are vision systems in a single package, but they aren't interchangeable across brands or generations. The lens, lighting accessories, software, and communication interfaces are all manufacturer-specific. Plan replacement carefully — replacing only the camera without the matching accessories often produces a non-working system.

Specifications to confirm before ordering:

  • Image sensor resolution (e.g., 640×480, 1280×1024, 2 MP, 5 MP)
  • Monochrome or color requirement
  • Lens focal length and working distance
  • Field of view and resolution per millimeter at the inspection plane
  • Required inspection rate (parts per minute)
  • Tools needed (pattern match, OCR/OCV, blob analysis, code reading)
  • Communication interface (Ethernet, EtherNet/IP, Profinet, RS-232)
  • I/O for trigger and result outputs
  • Software version compatible with the camera firmware
  • Lighting requirements (built-in or external)

Application guidance:

  • Code reading (1D and 2D): dedicated code readers (Cognex DataMan, Keyence SR) with built-in decode algorithms
  • Presence/absence inspection: entry-level smart sensors with pattern-match tools
  • Dimensional measurement: higher-resolution cameras with calibration and geometric tools
  • OCR/OCV (text reading and verification): mid-range smart cameras with text-recognition software
  • Defect inspection: high-resolution color cameras with blob and edge-detection tools

For replacement of an installed inspection, the goal is usually to maintain the same vision program. That requires matching the camera generation and firmware compatible with the original software — a newer-generation camera may require complete program rewriting.

Can you supply discontinued Cognex In-Sight or Keyence CV-series cameras?
Yes — legacy Cognex In-Sight 5000-series, older CV-X and CV-3500 series Keyence cameras, and similar discontinued smart cameras are common requests. Many are still running on production inspection lines. Send the part number for availability.
Can I run my existing vision program on a replacement camera?
If it's the same model and similar firmware revision, usually yes. If it's a newer generation camera, often not — the software file format and tool library may have changed. Confirm software version compatibility before ordering.
Are lens and lighting included?
Usually not. Smart cameras are sold without lens. Some integrated sensors (Banner iVu, Omron FQ) have built-in fixed-focal-length lenses. External lighting (ring lights, bar lights, backlights) is sold separately. The product page lists what's included.
Cognex versus Keyence versus SICK — can I cross-reference?
The cameras themselves are not cross-compatible — different software, different image processing, different communication protocols. If you're considering a brand change, expect a complete system replacement and program rewrite, not component substitution.
Are these new, surplus, or used?
Most stock is new-old-stock — unused, often in original packaging. Some legacy cameras come from tested system removals. Each product page lists condition where known.
