Choosing Display components

Industrial display selection depends on viewing distance, the data to be shown (numeric only, text messages, graphics), the communication interface from the source PLC or controller, and indoor vs. outdoor environment. A display too small for the viewing distance is unreadable; a display too large wastes panel space and budget.

Specs to confirm before ordering:

  • Display content: large numeric (counters, target/actual), text message (marquee), full graphic, or combined
  • Character height — typical rule is 1 inch of character height per 30 feet of viewing distance
  • Number of digits or lines, with extra capacity for future use
  • Color: monochrome red (highest visibility long distance), green, amber, multi-color, or full RGB
  • Communication: Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU (RS-485), serial ASCII, discrete I/O, IO-Link
  • Mounting: ceiling-hung, wall-mount, or pole-mount
  • Viewing angle and brightness — outdoor and bright-ambient installations need high-brightness models
  • IP rating — indoor displays typically IP54; outdoor IP65 or higher
  • Supply voltage: 24 VDC (small displays), 120/240 VAC (larger)

Common gotchas: a display with Modbus RTU communication needs the PLC side configured as Modbus master with the right baud, parity, and slave address; an out-of-the-box display will not show data without that configuration. Character height versus viewing distance is more critical than display brightness — a bright display with small characters is hard to read at 100 feet. Marquee text displays with serial input have specific message formats and command sets (Alpha protocol, EZMarquee command set); messages composed in the wrong format are silently rejected.

Typical applications: take-time and target counters on production lines, andon downtime indication for supervisor escalation, OEE percentage displays for line-level performance, temperature and pressure indication in large process areas, and shift-totals scoreboards in warehousing and shipping. On legacy installations, in-kind display replacement preserves the message format compatibility with the existing PLC code.

For obsolete industrial displays, send the OEM part number for a sourcing quote.

Do you stock obsolete marquee and scoreboard displays?
Yes. Discontinued Adaptive Micro Systems Alpha first generations, retired EZMarquee codes, end-of-life Red Lion LD400, and earlier Patlite signaling displays are sourced through our supplier network.
How big a display do I need for my viewing distance?
Rule of thumb: 1 inch of character height per 30 feet of viewing distance. So 2-inch characters are readable at about 60 feet, 4-inch at 120 feet. Outdoor sunlight conditions may require slightly larger to maintain readability.
Can the display take data directly from my PLC?
Yes via Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, or Modbus RTU on most modern displays. The PLC needs to be programmed to write values or messages to the display's communication address. Older displays may use ASCII serial protocols.
Will my saved message format work with a replacement?
If the model and firmware match, yes. Across model generations, the message command set sometimes changes — typically the new format is documented and the PLC side needs a small update.
Outdoor vs. indoor — what's the difference?
Outdoor displays use higher brightness LEDs (typically 5000+ nits), UV-stable lensing, and IP65+ sealing. Indoor displays in direct sunlight wash out and degrade quickly. Use outdoor-rated units for any exterior installation.
What is the warranty?
12-month functional warranty. Pixel/LED failures within warranty are covered. Damage from over-voltage, water ingress beyond IP rating, or impact damage is not covered.
