Choosing Barcode Scanners components

The first decision in selecting a barcode scanner is the form factor: fixed-mount for inline automated reads where the code passes through a known scan window, handheld for operator-driven scans, or presentation for hands-free counter use. Each has different optics, durability, and interface expectations.

Specs to confirm before ordering:

Form factor: fixed-mount, handheld (wired or cordless), presentation, or vehicle-mount
Code coverage: 1D laser is fastest on 1D codes but cannot read 2D; image-based reads both, including PDF417 and Data Matrix
DPM capability for laser-etched or dot-peen codes on metal parts
Working distance and depth of field — fixed-focus is faster, liquid-lens or autofocus adapts but is slower
Host interface: USB-HID (keyboard emulation), USB-COM (serial emulation), RS-232, Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus TCP, Bluetooth
Drop and IP rating — industrial handhelds rated to 1.8–2.4 m drop and IP54/IP65 minimum
Trigger method on fixed-mount: photoelectric, encoder pulse, PLC discrete, or continuous

Common gotchas: handheld scanners in USB-HID mode work without drivers but cannot pass non-printable characters cleanly to a database — use USB-COM with a serial driver for ERP/WMS integrations. Fixed-mount image-based readers need lighting matched to the code and the substrate; ambient sun on a loading dock changes readability throughout the day. Cordless Bluetooth scanners drift out of range silently and queue scans locally; verify the queue-and-sync behavior matches your workflow before deploying.

Typical applications: serial-number tracking on automotive parts, label verification on pharmaceutical packaging, parcel routing on sorters, receiving and putaway in distribution centers, and work-order scanning on the shop floor. For legacy installations with discontinued scanners — older Symbol or first-generation DataMan — in-kind replacement preserves the host configuration, mounting, and trigger wiring.

Fixed-mount vs. handheld — which do I need?

Fixed-mount when the code moves to the scanner on a conveyor or fixture. Handheld when an operator brings the scanner to the code. Presentation when items are placed in front of a hands-free scanner. The form factor drives optics, mounting, and interface choices.

Do you stock obsolete barcode scanners?

Yes. Retired Symbol LS-series, Honeywell 1300/1900 codes, older Datalogic Lynx, and earlier Cognex DataMan generations are sourced regularly through our supplier network.

Will my saved configuration transfer to a replacement scanner?

Within the same model and firmware family, yes. Across firmware revisions or model generations, the configuration file usually needs conversion in the OEM software (DataMan Setup Tool, SOPAS, Aladdin). We will state firmware on each unit.

Can the same scanner read 1D and 2D codes?

Only image-based scanners read both. Laser scanners read 1D only. If your codes include any 2D format (Data Matrix, QR, PDF417), choose an image-based unit.

Are replacement batteries available for cordless models?

Yes for most current and recent generations. For long-discontinued cordless models, OEM batteries can be scarce — we will state availability before you commit.

What is the warranty?

12 months functional warranty on every scanner regardless of form factor, including surplus and refurbished stock.
