Choosing Time Delay Relays components

Time delay relay selection requires matching the timing function to the control logic and verifying the timing range, supply voltage, and output configuration. Multi-function timers offer flexibility at the cost of more complex setup — single-function units are usually easier to spec and troubleshoot.

Specs to confirm before ordering:

  • Timing function: on-delay (delay-on-make), off-delay (delay-on-break), single-shot (one-pulse), interval (energized for set time), recycle (on/off repeating), watchdog, multi-function
  • Timing range — covers the needed setpoint with margin (e.g., a 0.1–10 s timer set near its maximum is less accurate than one set mid-range)
  • Time accuracy and repeatability (typically ±0.2–2% of setpoint)
  • Supply voltage: 24 VDC, 120 VAC, 240 VAC, or multi-voltage universal
  • Output: SPDT, DPDT relay contacts, sometimes transistor output for fast switching
  • Contact rating at AC and DC at the load type (resistive, inductive)
  • Mounting: 8-pin or 11-pin plug-in socket, DIN-rail, panel-mount
  • Setpoint method: dial (analog), DIP switches, or digital display

Common gotchas: an "off-delay" timer needs to maintain its timing after the trigger input drops, which means it must remain powered — most off-delay relays are still powered by the supply and only the trigger input goes away. Pure two-wire off-delay timers exist but are uncommon. Multi-function timers configured via DIP switches are easy to mis-set during installation; a configuration label inside the cabinet helps future maintenance. Plug-in relays with octal (11-pin) base are not interchangeable across brands for pin orientation; verify the socket pinout matches the timer.

Typical applications: motor anti-cycle delays, sequenced starting of multiple loads, pneumatic dwell timing, alarm escalation timing, ventilation run-on after equipment shutdown, and conveyor jog/start delays. On legacy installations, in-kind timer replacement preserves the setpoint and socket wiring.

On-delay vs. off-delay — what's the difference?
On-delay (delay-on-make): output activates AFTER a delay following input energization. Off-delay (delay-on-break): output stays activated for a delay AFTER input is removed. Match to your control logic — they are not interchangeable.
How accurate are these timers?
Most modern electronic timers achieve ±0.2–1% of setpoint, with repeatability typically better than that. Older RC-based timers can drift 5–10% over their lifetime. For tight timing, use digital-setpoint timers.
Can I use a multi-function timer to replace a single-function one?
Yes, if configured correctly. Multi-function timers are commonly used as drop-in replacements when the exact single-function variant is not available. Label the DIP switch settings inside the cabinet for future reference.
Will my socket work with the replacement?
If pin count and pinout match, yes. Octal (11-pin) timers from different brands are usually interchangeable, but 8-pin square base and 14-pin square base have brand-specific pinouts — confirm the socket diagram.
What is the warranty?
12-month functional warranty on the timer. Damage from over-voltage, miswiring, and contact wear from extended cycling at rated load are not covered.
