Choosing Machine Vision Accessories components

Machine vision accessories are where many installations either succeed or fail. The camera and the application get the attention; the lens, filter, mount stability, and cable shielding determine whether the result is repeatable. None of these are interchangeable across brands without checking.

Specs to confirm before ordering accessories:

  • Lenses: mount type (C, CS, F), focal length, sensor format compatibility (a 1/2" lens vignettes on a 1" sensor), aperture range, working distance
  • Filters: threading diameter, wavelength (red 625 nm, blue 470 nm, IR 850/940 nm), bandpass vs. longpass vs. shortpass, polarizing
  • Cables: standard (GigE Cat6a, USB3 with locking screws, Camera Link MDR-26), length, shielding, and whether active/repeater versions are needed for long runs
  • Lighting controllers: matched to lighting unit, strobe vs. continuous mode, trigger input voltage (5 V vs. 24 V)
  • Mounts and brackets: rigidity matters — a flexible mount drifts under vibration and breaks calibration

Common gotchas: a higher-resolution camera demands a higher-resolution lens — a megapixel-rated lens used on a 12 MP sensor introduces blur regardless of focus. Bandpass filters paired with the wrong lighting wavelength block the signal you are trying to capture. Camera Link cables longer than ~7 m typically require Medium-mode or active cables. Locking screws on USB3 Vision cables are not optional in vibrating environments — vibration loosens unlocked connectors.

Typical replacement scenarios: a lens dropped during a tooling change, a filter that yellowed under UV exposure, a cable damaged by chip ingress in a machining cell, or a lighting controller that lost output channels. For legacy systems with discontinued accessories — older Cognex CCB-style cables, retired Smart Vision Lights drivers, end-of-life CCS controllers — in-kind replacement preserves the existing geometry and electrical interface.

For obsolete or specific vision accessories, send the OEM part number for a quote.

Do you stock obsolete lenses and lighting controllers?
Yes. Discontinued Fujinon and Computar industrial lenses, end-of-life Smart Vision Lights drivers, retired CCS controllers, and legacy Cognex accessories are sourced regularly.
Will a 1/2" lens work on a 2/3" sensor?
Not without vignetting. The lens image circle must be equal to or larger than the sensor diagonal. Match lens format to sensor format or step up to a larger format lens.
What filter do I need for red LED lighting?
A 625 nm bandpass filter rejects most ambient light while passing the LED illumination, which is the typical setup for stable images under varying ambient. We can advise based on the LED wavelength.
Are cables manufacturer-specific?
Sometimes. Generic GigE Cat6a works for most GigE Vision cameras, but Camera Link cables with specific shielding and CCB-style cables for Cognex are typically OEM-specific. We will state when a cable is generic vs. OEM-matched.
How are lenses shipped?
From St. Louis, individually packed with caps on both ends. Free US shipping over $50, international over $350.
What is the warranty?
12 months functional warranty on the accessory. Optical surface damage from improper handling or chemical cleaning is not covered.
