Choosing AC Servo Drives components

AC servo drives are tuned to a matched AC servo motor and a specific controller/network configuration. The drive's part number encodes input supply, output current, command interface, safety options, and feedback type — and tuning parameters are usually stored in the drive or on a removable card. Replacing the wrong revision means re-commissioning at minimum.

Specs to confirm before ordering:

  • Exact OEM catalog number with all suffix codes
  • Input supply: single-phase 230 VAC, three-phase 200/400/480 VAC
  • Continuous and peak output current
  • Command/network interface: ±10 V, step/direction, EtherCAT, Mechatrolink-III, SERCOS III, Profinet IRT, CIP Motion
  • Motor feedback expected: resolver, sin/cos, absolute serial (EnDat, HIPERFACE, Yaskawa serial), battery-backed multi-turn
  • Safety integration: STO standard, networked safety (Safety-over-EtherCAT, CIP Safety, PROFIsafe) if used
  • Built-in regen resistor or external regen interface
  • Firmware version compatible with the saved drive parameter set
  • Mounting orientation (most drives are vertical-mount; horizontal mounting changes thermal derating)

Common gotchas: Kinetix 6000 (SERCOS II ControlNet-based) and Kinetix 5700 (CIP Motion Ethernet/IP) are not field-swappable — they require different controllers, networks, and project files. Mitsubishi MR-J4 will run MR-J3 motors only with explicit compatibility-mode wiring and parameter setup; silent fallback is not supported. Yaskawa Sigma-V and Sigma-7 drives use different parameter sets and have different motor compatibility tables; a Sigma-7 drive cannot blindly run a Sigma-V motor. Built-in regen capacity is sized to the drive frame — applications with high regenerative energy still need an external resistor sized to the duty cycle.

Typical applications: indexing axes on packaging and converting machines, X-Y-Z gantries, robotic motion, machine-tool feed axes, and high-precision pick-and-place. On legacy machines, exact OEM AC servo drive replacement preserves the network configuration, motor pairing, and stored tuning parameters.

For obsolete AC servo drives, send the OEM part number for a sourcing quote.

Do you stock obsolete AC servo drives?
Yes. Discontinued Kinetix 6000, Yaskawa Sigma-II/III, Mitsubishi MR-J2S/MR-J3, Siemens Simodrive 611, and earlier Omron R88D-G are sourced through our supplier network.
Will my saved tuning parameters transfer?
If the drive model and firmware match exactly, yes — parameters often transfer via memory card or upload/download in the OEM software. Across firmware revisions, parameter file conversion is usually needed. Across drive generations, tuning is typically redone.
Can a Sigma-7 drive run a Sigma-V motor?
Within published compatibility tables, yes — but the motor's feedback type and rated current must match Sigma-7's supported list. We will state compatibility status on the listing when known.
Is STO included on all current AC servo drives?
Most current-generation AC servo drives include STO as standard. Older drives may have STO as an option or not at all. The exact safety feature set is part-number-coded; we state it on each listing.
How are AC servo drives shipped?
Smaller frames ship parcel from St. Louis. Frame 3 and larger ship LTL freight. Standard free shipping applies; oversized freight is quoted at order.
What is the warranty?
12 months functional warranty. Damage from miswiring, motor short, over-voltage, or ground fault is not covered.
