Choosing Safety Products components

Safety products live under a different replacement constraint than general automation parts: substituting a safety device may change the safety function, the performance level, and the documented risk assessment. Replacing in kind preserves the existing safety case; switching brands or models almost always triggers re-validation.

Specs to confirm before ordering a safety device:

  • Exact OEM part number including all option codes
  • Performance Level (PL c, d, e per ISO 13849) and/or SIL (CL1, CL2, CL3 per IEC 62061)
  • Number and type of safety outputs/contacts
  • Auxiliary outputs for status to PLC (not safety-rated)
  • Supply voltage: typically 24 VDC, sometimes AC variants
  • Input channels and monitoring (single-channel, dual-channel, dual with cross-monitoring)
  • Reset behavior (automatic, manual, monitored manual)
  • Mounting and DIN-rail width
  • Cable/connector style for E-stops, interlocks, and scanners

Common gotchas: a safety relay rated to PL d cannot be silently replaced with one rated to PL c — that is a downgrade of the safety function and is a documentation/validation event. Configurable safety controllers (Pilz PNOZmulti, MSR210P, Sick Flexi Soft) require the original configuration file to be loaded onto the replacement unit, or the configuration is re-engineered. Safety light curtains and area scanners have specific resolution and response time ratings that affect the safety distance calculation; substituting a unit with different specifications changes that calculation.

Typical applications: E-stop monitoring on machine tools, light-curtain protection on press brakes and stamping presses, area scanning around robotic cells, gate interlocks with guard locking on hazardous machinery, and safe stop / safe limited speed coordination with safety-rated drives. For legacy machines, exact OEM safety device replacement preserves the existing risk assessment and validation documentation.

For obsolete safety products, send the OEM part number for a sourcing quote.

Are surplus safety devices still safety-rated?
The OEM safety rating is the property of the unit when it was manufactured; surplus units retain that rating. We do not re-certify devices. The 12-month warranty covers functional failure of the device, not the safety case of the installed system, which the integrator validates.
Can I substitute a different brand if the OEM is discontinued?
Sometimes, but it changes the safety function in documentation terms and requires re-validation per ISO 13849. Sourcing the exact OEM part from surplus keeps the existing safety documentation valid, which is usually the lower-effort path.
Do you stock obsolete Pilz, Sick, and Allen-Bradley safety devices?
Yes. Discontinued PNOZ X-series, retired Sick C4000 light curtains, end-of-life 440R safety relays, and earlier S300 laser scanners are sourced through our supplier network.
Are configuration files included with configurable safety devices?
Surplus units typically ship in their last-imaged or factory-default state. The application configuration is created in the OEM tool (PNOZmulti Configurator, ASIMON, Flexi Soft Designer) by the integrator and loaded onto the device.
How fast is shipping?
In-stock items ship same or next business day from St. Louis. Free US over $50, free international over $350.
What is the warranty?
12-month functional warranty on the device. Safety-function performance in the application is the integrator's responsibility, independent of the device warranty.
