Choosing Cable Assemblies components

Cable assemblies span many connector families, but the selection logic is consistent: identify the connector at each end, the conductor count and gauge, the cable jacket for the environment, the length, and the certifications required. Field-assembled cables save on inventory at the cost of installation labor; factory assemblies cost more in parts and save time.

Specs to confirm before ordering:

Connector family at each end: M8, M12, M16, M23, Harting Han, RJ45, RJ12, DB9/DB15, USB, fiber optic LC/SC/ST
For asymmetric assemblies, both ends specified separately (e.g., M12 to RJ45 for Profinet)
Cable length and tolerance
Conductor count and gauge — sized to current and signal type
Cable jacket: PVC, PUR, TPE, FEP (high-temperature)
Shield: unshielded, foil shield, braid shield, or both (S/FTP)
UL/CSA listing
Continuous-flex rating for drag chain applications
Cleanroom or food-grade certifications where applicable
EMC/EMI compliance for the specific protocol

Common gotchas: a Profinet "Cat 6a" assembly is not the same as a generic Cat 6a — Profinet-rated cables meet specific EMC and shielding requirements (PROFINET Type A/B/C) for industrial environments and have specific connector wiring (D-code M12, not standard RJ45 wiring). Drag chain cables use stranded conductors with specific lay-up and shield construction; standard installation cable used in drag chains fails within months from conductor breakage. Fiber optic jumpers have polish types (UPC vs. APC) that are not interchangeable — APC-polished connectors mate only with APC-polished mating faces.

Typical applications: sensor/actuator wiring with circular M-series, fieldbus and Ethernet with M12-D/M12-X and RJ45 assemblies, power distribution with Harting Han pre-assembled multi-conductor, fiber-optic links between control rooms and field cabinets, and inter-machine multi-conductor with custom-pinout cable assemblies. Do you stock obsolete cable assemblies?

Yes. Across circular, rectangular, Ethernet, and fiber families — discontinued Phoenix Contact, retired Murr, end-of-life Harting Han pre-assemblies, and earlier Lumberg assemblies are sourced through our supplier network.

What is the difference between Cat 6a and Profinet cable?

Profinet cables meet specific Profinet International specifications (Type A/B/C) for shielding and EMC, with green jacket and 4-pair construction terminated to Profinet pinout. Generic Cat 6a may meet electrical performance but does not always meet Profinet's environmental and color-coding requirements.

Drag chain vs. standard cable — does it really matter?

Yes. Standard installation cable used in a cable carrier fails within months from conductor breakage and shield damage. Drag-chain (continuous-flex) cable uses special stranding and is rated for millions of bend cycles. Use chainflex or equivalent in any moving cable run.

Can I order custom multi-conductor assemblies?

Standard catalog assemblies cover the common combinations. Custom multi-conductor assemblies (custom pinout, custom length) can be quoted with extended lead time; send the wiring schedule and connector specifications.

Fiber optic UPC vs. APC — what's the difference?

UPC (Ultra Polished Connector) is the standard polish. APC (Angled Polished Connector) has an 8° angle for lower back-reflection — required for some applications and not interchangeable with UPC. The connector itself looks identical; the polish type is part of the part number.

What is the warranty?

12-month functional warranty. Damage from kinking, chafe, pull-out, or use outside the rated environment is not covered.
