Choosing Pressure Sensors components

Selecting a pressure sensor requires matching the pressure range, media, process connection, electrical output, and accuracy to the application. Oversized ranges sacrifice resolution; undersized ranges fail under transient spikes. The process fitting and the wetted material are where most field issues originate.

Specs to confirm before ordering:

  • Measurement type: gauge (relative to atmosphere), absolute, compound (vacuum + positive), differential
  • Range, with operating max typically 60–80% of rated full-scale to leave headroom for spikes
  • Process connection: 1/4" NPT, 1/2" NPT, G1/4, G1/2, sanitary tri-clamp, flush diaphragm
  • Wetted parts: 316 stainless, Hastelloy, ceramic, for media compatibility
  • Output: 4–20 mA (2-wire is most common), 0–10 V, 0.5–4.5 V ratiometric, IO-Link, switch contact
  • Supply voltage: 10–30 VDC for transmitters; 24/120/230 VAC for switches
  • Accuracy class: typically 0.25%, 0.5%, or 1.0% of span
  • Electrical connection: DIN 43650, M12, 1/2" NPT conduit, flying leads

For hydraulic applications, pulsation and pressure spikes can be 2–3× steady-state — choose range and over-pressure rating accordingly, and consider a snubber. For viscous, slurry, or food-grade media, a flush diaphragm sensor avoids clogged ports. For pneumatic systems, a switch-only device is often cheaper than a full transmitter if only on/off interlock is needed.

Typical applications: hydraulic press cycle monitoring, pneumatic clamp confirmation, vacuum verification on pick-and-place end-effectors, and pump discharge monitoring on water systems. Legacy machine controls often use a specific pressure-switch part number whose contact form (SPDT, DPDT) and setpoint range cannot be substituted casually — for those, exact OEM match from surplus stock is the safer route.

Can you source obsolete pressure transmitters?
Yes. Discontinued Wika, IFM, Keller, and similar models are routinely sourced from surplus and new-old-stock channels. Send the full part number for an accurate quote.
What is the difference between gauge and absolute pressure?
Gauge reads relative to local atmospheric pressure (zero at atmosphere). Absolute reads relative to a perfect vacuum (atmospheric ≈ 14.7 psi at sea level). They are not interchangeable.
Are calibration certificates included?
Manufacturer factory calibration is included where the original certificate is available with the unit. NIST-traceable recalibration can be quoted separately for critical applications.
Can I get a flush-diaphragm version for viscous media?
Yes — flush-diaphragm and sanitary clamp variants are listed where stocked, and can be sourced on request for most major brands.
How are these shipped?
From St. Louis. Free US shipping over $50, free international over $350. Sensors are individually packed with the original or equivalent protective fittings.
What if the sensor reads incorrectly out of the box?
Contact us within 30 days. Returns are accepted hassle-free, and the 12-month functional warranty covers replacement or refund.
