Choosing Variable Frequency Drives components

VFD replacement is rarely just "matching the horsepower." The full catalog string encodes input voltage, output current, enclosure type, communication option, brake transistor, and EMC filtering — and each of those affects whether the drive will commission on the motor and the network without modification.

Specs to confirm before ordering a VFD:

  • Full OEM catalog number including all option codes
  • Input supply: single-phase 120/240 VAC, three-phase 208/240/380/480/600 VAC
  • Output rating: motor HP/kW AND full-load amps (the FLA is what matters for sizing)
  • Duty: normal duty (variable torque, pump/fan) vs. heavy duty (constant torque, conveyors, mixers)
  • Enclosure rating: IP20/NEMA 1, IP54/NEMA 12, IP66/NEMA 4X
  • Built-in brake transistor presence (for regenerative loads)
  • EMC filter category (internal vs. external)
  • Communication option: Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, Profinet, Profibus, DeviceNet, CC-Link
  • Keypad/HIM included or remote-mounted

Common gotchas: a PowerFlex 525 22F-D2P3N103 is not the same as a 22F-D2P3N113 — the last digits change EMC filter and communications. Yaskawa A1000 codes encode duty, enclosure, and EMC; a 4A0011 is 480V/11A heavy-duty, not a like-for-like with 4A0011AAA. Mitsubishi FR-A800 substitution into an FR-A700 slot requires parameter migration with the OEM tool, not just re-wiring. Phase loss, ground-fault sensitivity, and DC bus capacitor pre-charge time all differ across generations and can trip during commissioning.

Typical applications: variable-speed pumps and fans for energy savings, conveyor speed control, mixer and extruder torque control, and machine-tool spindle drives. On legacy production lines, the existing drive is parameterized and integrated to the PLC and HMI — an exact OEM replacement preserves that integration. A drive from a different family will require re-parameterization, possible PLC code changes if the communication option differs, and re-tuning under load.

Do you stock obsolete PowerFlex, ABB, and Yaskawa drives?
Yes. Discontinued PowerFlex 40/70/700, ABB ACS400/ACS550, and Yaskawa GPD/V7 are part of regular sourcing. Send the full catalog number.
Are the drives tested?
Yes. Each VFD is bench-tested for power-up, fault clear, and output to a test motor where practical. Parameter set is reset to factory defaults before shipping.
Can I substitute a drive from a different brand?
Electrically possible if voltage and current match, but it changes parameter setup, network protocol, and possibly the keypad operator workflow. For legacy lines, exact OEM is usually less disruptive than a brand change.
Will the brake resistor from my old drive work on a replacement?
If the catalog number matches exactly, yes. Across generations, brake transistor presence and the external resistor wiring point can change — confirm before reusing.
How are large drives shipped?
Frame 4 and larger drives ship LTL freight from St. Louis. Smaller frames ship parcel. Shipping charges over $50 US / $350 international are waived; oversized freight is quoted at the time of order.
What is the warranty on a refurbished drive?
The same 12-month functional warranty as new and surplus units. Damage from miswiring, over-voltage, or motor faults is not covered.
