Choosing Temperature and Process Controllers components

Process controller selection comes down to the process variable, the input/output mix, the control sophistication needed (simple on/off vs. PID with autotune vs. cascade or ratio control), and the communication integration. Modern controllers are option-coded extensively; the part number string determines what the unit can actually do.

Specs to confirm before ordering:

Exact OEM part number including all option codes
Input type: thermocouple (specific types), RTD (Pt100/Pt1000), 4–20 mA process, 0–10 V process, frequency, contact
Number of inputs (single-loop, dual-loop, multi-loop)
Number and type of outputs: relay (mechanical, limited life), SSR drive (logic level for solid-state relays), 4–20 mA control, 0–10 V control, motorized-valve open/close pair
Control algorithm: PID with autotune, on/off, fuzzy logic, cascade, ratio
Setpoint programming: single setpoint, ramp/soak profiles, multi-segment recipes
Alarm outputs: high/low/deviation/band
Communication: RS-485 Modbus RTU, Ethernet Modbus TCP, Profinet, EtherNet/IP, Profibus, ASCII serial
Power supply: 100–240 VAC universal, 24 VDC for some DIN-rail variants

Common gotchas: thermocouple type is a configuration setting; a controller set for K-type wired to a J-type thermocouple gives readings that look reasonable but are wrong by tens of degrees. SSR-drive outputs are 12 V or 5 V logic that switch external SSRs — wiring directly to a contactor coil does nothing. PID parameters from one controller do not transfer to another brand without translation; "P", "I", "D" units differ across manufacturers. Eurotherm 2400-series, 3200-series, and nanodac are not interchangeable despite similar panel cutout — the part-number string determines feature set, and saved configurations are not portable.

Typical applications: barrel-zone temperature control on extruders and injection molders, oven temperature setpoint control, autoclave cycle management, chemical dosing pump control via 4–20 mA flowmeter feedback, and pressure regulation on chemical reactors. On legacy machines, exact-OEM controller replacement preserves the configuration, the PLC integration, and the operator workflow.

Do you stock obsolete Eurotherm, Honeywell, and Watlow controllers?

Yes. Discontinued Eurotherm 2400/2604, retired Honeywell UDC2000/3000, end-of-life Watlow F4P, and earlier Omron E5CN are sourced through our supplier network.

Will my saved configuration transfer to a replacement?

If the model and firmware match, yes — clone via the OEM software (iTools for Eurotherm, EZ-ZONE Configurator for Watlow). Across firmware revisions or models, the configuration usually needs partial re-entry.

SSR drive vs. relay output — which do I need?

SSR drive (logic-level 12 V or 5 V) drives external solid-state relays for high-cycle resistive heating. Mechanical relay output drives contactor coils directly. The two are not interchangeable; check the loaded option on each unit.

Can I substitute a different brand controller?

Sometimes, with re-configuration. Process variable input, output type, and communication integration need to be matched. PID parameters do not transfer across brands; expect to retune. For tightly-integrated systems, in-kind replacement is the lower-effort path.

Are autotune algorithms reliable?

For first-cut tuning, yes — modern autotune gives a usable PID set. For tightly-coupled or fast processes, manual fine-tuning by an experienced engineer outperforms autotune. Use autotune as a starting point.

What is the warranty?

12-month functional warranty. Damage from over-voltage on inputs, miswired thermocouples (especially open-thermocouple at full-output failure mode), or operating outside rated environment is not covered.
